Dogs looking for forever homes...

Dogs with "I'm not quite ready for adoption yet" or "I'm in surgery today" cannot be visited until they are available. Check back often if you don't fall in love with one of the dogs currently listed.

All of our adoptable dogs are spayed or neutered, current on all shots, and ready to go home with you.

Ready to Adopt?

Tips for deciding if this is the right time

  • Are the other dogs and cats in your home neutered or spayed and current on shots?
  • Have you researched the breed of pet you are interested in?
  • How will you deal with housebreaking, training, behavioral problems and daily care of a pet?
  • What kind of pet is best for you and your family?
  • Will your working hours allow enough time to provide the care, attention and exercise a pet needs every day?
  • If you have children, are they prepared to be respectful to an animal that lives in your home and prepared to share the responsibilities involved in pet ownership?
  • Do you have the means to provide food, toys, annual vet exams, vaccinations, monthly heartworm preventative, flea control, unexpected medical costs, grooming, training, and boarding the pet when you travel?
  • Are you ready to live with a pet? Can you depend on your children to help care for your pet?
  • Have you read about potty training, behavior problems, and daily care of your pet?
  • What traits are common in that breed? Do those behavioral traits fit your lifestyle?
  • Have all those living within your household interacted with the dog or cat?
  • If adopting a dog and you have a dog at home, has your dog come in for an interaction?

Adoption process

What should you expect when you enter our shelter to visit with our dogs and cats and how do you adopt? See the steps below so you are prepared for your visit.

1. Adoption requirements

If you have a cat(s) or dog(s) living in your home already, a maximum of one pet can be unaltered. The other pets must be neutered or spayed. All cats and dogs in your home must be current on rabies vaccination. If you rent your home you will need to have approval from your landlord and any pet deposits paid before taking home your new pet. All those living within your household must be present to interact with the dog or cat. If adopting a dog and you have a dog at home, that dog must come in for an interaction. You will need to bring a leash and collar or a suitable crate or carrier when you pick up your new pet.

2. Pre-adoption application

When you enter our shelter we will ask you to fill out a pre adoption application. Even if you have seen one of our animals you are interested in on our website, television or other source, we want to make sure we gather as much information as possible about your expectations in a pet to best help you find your future companion.

Take a look through our binder at our shelter during adoption hours or online to see pictures, details about each dog or cat’s behavior and what type of home would be best for that pet. Make your selections of animals you would like to see and come out to our shelter. We will take you into our socialization room to visit with dogs or into a cat room to visit with the cats. Please note, some of our cats are available at our mobile adoption rooms located at the PetSmart locations in Fort Wayne. Check the "Location" for each cat or kitten on our website by clicking on their picture.

3. Visit with the pet

Spend time interacting with the animal and ask our staff questions you may have about how we received the animal, any behavioral information about the animal. We are there to help you get as familiar as possible with the animals. All those living within your household need to interact with the dog or cat.

4. Application process

After you have visited with the pet, you may feel you would like to make it a part of your family. If you do, we will begin the adoption application approval process. We will do a simple background check for animal cruelty or domestic violence.

5. Pre-approved applications

If you fill out an adoption application and do not take home the love of your life on this visit, you may ask us to process your application so that you may be pre-approved for a future pet. A pre-approved application is valid for up to 6 months. This will enable you to take advantage of same day adoption events.

6. Same day adoption

You may take your new pet home the same day if the following are accomplished:

  • You own your own home OR show proof from your landlord that a pet is permitted and pet deposits are paid.
  • All those living within your household come in to interact with the dog or cat.
  • If adopting a dog and you have a dog at home, that dog comes in for an interaction.
  • Bring in current vaccination records for any pets at home.

Name Your Fee on Feline Adoptions

Our adoption fees include spay or neuter surgery, distemper combination vaccination, rabies vaccination, flea prevention, canine heartworm test and prevention, registered microchip for permanent I.D. and a starter bag of pet food. This is a value of $300 to $400!

Adoption fee does not include $5 City of Fort Wayne pet tag/permit required for Fort Wayne city residents.

Adopters must provide a leash and collar for dogs and/or suitable crate for cats.

Please Note:

We take every measure to adopt out healthy and suitible pets for your lifestyle. If you find that you are unable to care for your new companion, you will need to call the shelter before re-homing the pet. We take this very seriously and have our animals' well-being as the utmost importance when finding them forever homes. You will be asked to sign a binding contract to ensure the safety and care of your new pet.

Your new pet will be microchipped before you take him or her home. This microchip is not a GPS. If your pet ever becomes lost, the finder will have to take him or her to a local vet, our shelter, or Animal Care & Control for a simple scan of your pet. This will bring up your contact information so that you can reunite with him or her in the event of an emergency or lost and found.
