APRIL 15 - ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
NEW LOCATION: Downtown Library
Don’t forget the ACSPCA’s Annual Membership meeting on Tuesday, April 15. The meeting will be at the Allen County Public Library, downtown branch in Room A (directions available in the main hallway). All current members are invited to attend the meeting that will begin at 7:30 p.m. Doors will be open at 7:15 and refreshments will be served. There will be no dinner before the meeting.
Meet other members, vote for 5 directors, hear the good news from 2007, and…enjoy guest speaker, Cris Stevens, founder of “Prison Tails”, the very successful offender/dog training program at Westville (Indiana) Correctional Facility. The meeting is scheduled to conclude by 8:45 p.m
The highlight of the evening will be hearing from Cris Stevens, founder of “Mixed Up Mutts Rescue” and founder of the “Prison Tails”, a very successful dog training program at Westville Correctional Facility.
The “Prison Tails” program, which has gained national attention and has been a model for similar programs across the country, rescues very unadoptable, less desirable dogs from area rescues and matches them with a trained inmate at Westville. They are paired together for 4-6 weeks, during which time the dog lives around the clock with the inmate. The inmate spends time working with the dogs daily until the animal is able to earn its “K-9 Good Citizen Certification”.
According to Cris, there are approximately 20 dogs going through the process at any given time. Once the dogs become certified, the program works to place them in loving adoptive homes. Their success rate of placing the animals is 100%.
The inmates must go through intense “dog ownership” training themselves, and there is a waiting list of participants. For many of them, this is the only good thing that has ever happened in their life. It gives them something very positive to focus on.
This is truly an amazing, and very uplifting story. Please plan on coming to our meeting April 15 to share the evening with us.
